Luma Matte Transition

Our first project in Animation I is to create a Luma matte transition. For those of you who dont know what a Luma Matte is.

"Luma matte: A luma matte is an image that tells the program the transparency of affected images, videos or media. Typically the black part of a luma matte is 100% transparent showing up invisible in the render. The white part of the luma matte or mask is 100% opaque and shows up in the render. Any greys in the image are interpolated between 100% transparency and 100% opaque."

We first had to create 25 different transitions using objects or interesting animating techniques. Here is my list with a couple of reference photos. I do not take credit for any of these photos or objects.

1.     A bug starts to eat away at the black and eats all the way through by frame 90.
2.     A windshield wiper wipes away the black.
3.    White dots start to appear on frame 2 and start to scale in size adding to the white which envelopes the frame.
4.     The frame is set up into rows and on frame 2; the rows start to fold up into themselves.
5.     A checkerboard pattern creates itself by alternating colors. Frame 90 the entire checkerboard is white.
6.     Paintbrush strokes cover the frame in white.
7.     Two diagonal slashes come in from the bottom left hand corner and the upper right hand corner. When they fully cover the middle, they ease into a separation in the middle and then quickly wipe away the remaining black.
8.     Three diagonal white bars move in from the bottom left corner and move left and right while scaling by frame 90 to cover the screen.
9.     Shoe tracks “step” on the black frame to cover it completely in white.

10.   Rip strips of black tape off of the frame to fully reveal the white in strips.

11.   Use two white matte Chinese fans to cover the black. They start to come in on frame 2 and by frame 60 they are in the frame and starting to fan out. Frame 90 they are completely flat and screen is white.

12.   Cover light box in rubber bands that are painted matte black. On frame 2, start cutting the rubber bands so they snap out of frame. By frame 90 all rubber bands are cut, revealing white.
13.   Use two pieces of mesh to go from black to white. Start with one mesh coming in at 2 and fully covering the frame at frame 35, the other piece of mesh coming in and blocking the interlocking holes by frame 90.
14.   Paint receding up the frame from the bottom.
15.   Frame 2 a white ring shows up in the middle, around it a circle shows up by frame 10. They start to circle the ring and start getting bigger by frame 30. At frame 80 they have encompassed the outer area of the ring in white when a circle appears in the middle and scales up to cover the entire center of the ring by 90.
16.   Spotlight search. A white circle appears and starts “searching” the frame for another white circle, which is in the center. At Frame 45, the spotlight finds the circle and the found circle expands and covers the frame by 90.
17.   Cutout snowflakes. At frame 2 random amounts of snowflakes start to fall down with their sizes and amounts becoming greater so they cover the screen in white by frame 90.
18.   Bomb rolls in from left at frame 2 and unravels blast cord that is then lit by frame 30 and reaches the bomb at frame 60. The explosion covers the screen in white at frame 90.
19.   Ripple. A small circle appears and gets larger over 15 frames. At 16 it disappears and a ripple starts at the center and ripples outward until frame 90 where it covers the frame.
20.   Plane transition. A runway and plane appear at frame 2 and the plane starts to take off at frame 10. At frame 25 it is near the end of the runway and starts to “ascend” filling up the screen at 90.
21.   A flock of origami birds show up at frame 2 and fly across the frame completely whiting it out at 90.
22.   origami. The black frame is folded into an origami frog until frame 80 where the frog then jumps out of frame by 90.
23.   Thread unraveling. The black frame is taken away in one continuous thread from the same side of the frame.
24.   Animal feet prints. Starting at frame 2, animal footprints start to appear and cover up the screen in white. Made using Cardboard templates covered in paint.
25.   Eraser. The frame starts to be wiped away by an invisible eraser.
